In order to begin the process of divorce, you have to file a Petition for Divorce. The Petition is the document that gets things started. When you file a Petition and pay the filing fee, you’ll receive a case number and be assigned a judge, who will eventually sign your Decree of Divorce.
The Petition also provides the court and your spouse with some basic information about issues that will need to be resolved, such as child custody, personal property, financial accounts, and real estate.
